This winter, our teams at STEM and on Valentin’s farm have paired up to bring you “STEM on the Farm“. Two workshops, designed to suit both early and late primary stages.
Early Primary
In our Countryside Clocks and Wild Bodies workshops pupils will meet the animals that live on our farm and discover the clever ways they are able to tell the time of day or even the time of year. They will also discover the big and little monsters that live here in Scotland, learning about similarities and differences between their bodies and ours.
Late Primary
Pupils will enjoy taking part in our Build a Sheep and Gene-iuses workshops. During a tour of our Education farm, young learners will spend time with our rare and native breed animals, observing, discussing and learning about the ingenious characteristics they have developed over many centuries in order to survive and thrive in Scotland. Pupils will explore inheritance and genetics, finding out how certain traits are passed from parents to offspring and how farmers manage this to breed the “perfect” livestock.
Our school education workshops support the delivery of The Curriculum For Excellence, and many of our activities are based outdoors on our 2000 acre estate, making use of our natural spaces to inspire learning. The King’s Foundation works in harmony with the natural world, and as such our workshops also touch upon the UN Sustainable Development goals and support learning for sustainability. Please see below for further workshop details.
Our workshop can accommodate a maximum of 30 pupils. For smaller groups, there is a 15-pupil minimum charge.
Costs
There is no charge for this workshop at point of booking, however schools will receive an invoice from our finance team soon after the booking is confirmed. Our current charge is £5 per head, increasing to £5.50 per head in January 2025 and is based on numbers provided at the time of booking. Invoices must be paid prior to the workshop taking place. If you bring additional pupils on the day, you will receive a further invoice to cover any additional material costs. We cannot offer refunds to schools bringing fewer pupils than stated at point of booking.
We have two estate minibuses that can be booked at very competetive prices, by emailing dh.education@kings-foundation.org (subject to availability). These minibuses are charged according to mileage and seat a maximum of 15 passengers including your staff.
Please note that many of our workshops take place outdoors and as such pupils and staff should attend ready for the weather.
