This Winter session, our teams at STEM and in the Education Garden have paired up to bring you “STEM in the Garden”. A full day workshop designed to suit Primary and Secondary stages.

All Primary
In our Weather Watchers and Working with the Weather workshops,  pupils will explore how the wind direction and speed influences our weather and measure the energy available in the wind before reporting it to the Met Office. In the garden, they’ll explore how the weather affects our plants and our food before thinking about ways a gardener must work with the weather to make sure all their plants are healthy.

Secondary
In the Education Garden, pupils will investigate how our woodlands contribute to weather function and discover creatures that depend on our native woodlands, and why. Heading out on the Dumfries House Estate, they will carry out a woodland condition assessment to find out how we care for the trees on our doorstep. At the STEM centre pupils will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of photosynthesis and the carbon cycle by undertaking field measurements to calculate carbon storage in trees and how they play an important role in mitigating climate change.

Our school education workshops support the delivery of The Curriculum For Excellence, and many of our activities are based outdoors on our 2000 acre estate, making use of our natural spaces to inspire learning. The King’s Foundation works in harmony with the natural world, and as such our workshops also touch upon the UN Sustainable Development goals and support learning for sustainability. Please see below for further workshop details.

Our workshops can accommodate a maximum of 30 pupils for primary and 20 pupils for secondary. For smaller groups, there is a 15 (12 for secondary) pupil minimum charge.

Costs

There is no charge for this workshop at point of booking, however Primary Schools can expect to receive an invoice from our finance team soon after your booking is confirmed. You will be charged £5 per head (this will increase to £5.50 in January 2025) based on numbers provided at the time of booking, and this must be paid prior to the workshop taking place. If you bring additional pupils on the day, you will receive a further invoice to cover any additional material costs. We cannot offer refunds to schools bringing fewer pupils than stated at point of booking. There is no charge for Secondary Schools.

We have two estate minibuses that can be booked at very competitive prices, by emailing dh.education@kings-foundation.org  (subject to availability). These minibuses are charged according to mileage and seat a maximum of 15 passengers including your staff.

Please note that many of our workshops take place outdoors and as such pupils and staff should attend ready for the weather.
