The Philosophy of Harmony
Our work is underpinned by King Charles III’s philosophy of Harmony: that by understanding the balance, order and relationships between ourselves and the natural world, we can create a more sustainable future.
Our philosophy
‘Harmony’ is a universal expression for the order, connection and balance found in nature.
The Harmony philosophy sees everything in nature as interconnected, including ourselves. This means taking a holistic approach to the challenges facing our planet, and looking to solve these challenges by working with nature, rather than against her.
Harmony: A New Way of Looking at Our World
‘Harmony: A New Way of Looking at Our World’ was published in 2010. The book explained the then Prince of Wales’ philosophy.
It covers a range of subjects, from the way we plan and design urban spaces to the way we farm and produce our food, the way we approach our health and wellbeing, the way we process waste, and the importance of developing more circular economies.
It showed the fundamental connections between all these areas and how looking holistically at the world can help us solve its biggest problems.
His Majesty King Charles III, speaking as the then Prince of Wales“We have somehow abandoned our proper connection with nature. Somehow imagined that we can manage without, or we battle against her in every way – instead of understanding that the future lies in working in far greater harmony with nature.”
Working with nature, not against her
The philosophy of Harmony shapes all of our work at The King’s Foundation. We put this philosophy into practice and advocate for living harmoniously with the natural world across our work, ultimately aiming to improve the wellbeing of people and planet.
