MSt in Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part 2)

The University of Cambridge and The King’s Foundation have joined forces to offer this unique Master’s course in Architecture that is part of the route to ARB professional accreditation.

The MSt in Architecture offers a three-year, part-time route towards qualifying as an architect. This flexible postgraduate programme provides a rigorous and immersive route into the profession while accommodating the needs of those already working in practice.

The King’s Foundation is proud to contribute a unique specialist stream in traditional design to the MSt in Architecture at the University of Cambridge. This stream complements the course’s strong grounding in sustainable technologies by offering academic emphasis and tailored supervision for students committed to traditional architecture and urban design.

A New Pathway for Architectural Education: Traditional Architecture Stream

Drawing on The King’s Foundation’s longstanding expertise in built environment education, the traditional design stream enriches the programme with a distinctive focus on enduring design practices and contextual understanding of historic forms, empowering future architects to integrate time-honoured craftsmanship and design wisdom with contemporary professional goals.

Students on the traditional design stream will explore the relationship between buildings and places, studying how buildings relate to their context and the natural world around them. They will build an understanding of how language in architecture evolves and develops from the materials, building systems and techniques that are specific to the local geology, climate, and culture of the area. Students will learn what it takes to build in a durable manner so that buildings can last and grow old gracefully. They will also discover how to build in towns and cities to create places that are walkable, practical and beautiful for people to enjoy.

A Flexible Programme Structure

The MSt in Architecture is a part-time, 3-year course that enables future architects to study while balancing work and life. The programme is delivered through nine modules: three two-week residential sessions each year in Cambridge. Between teaching, students complete and enhance their crit presentations and individualise group projects. These intensive periods of study create a close-knit learning environment at Cambridge while enabling participants to maintain their professional commitments throughout the year.

Students will gain advanced architectural knowledge in areas from research methods to advanced computer modelling, façade design to urban design. Students focus on the practical as well as the theoretical; learning as part of a supportive cohort, collaborating in small groups as well as working individually.

This programme is offered by the University of Cambridge, which is responsible for validation and accreditation, with the specialist Traditional Design stream delivered in collaboration with The King’s Foundation.
