Horticulture and Sustainable Food Systems

Food production is explored through ecological, cultural and scientific lenses, with hands-on learning across the Dumfries House Estate. Participants engage in horticulture, connecting soil health, biodiversity, and land stewardship. The programme links local practice to global food equity. Practical skills and critical thinking are developed through real world experiences. Sustainability is at the heart of every activity.

About our programmes

Our programmes explore the full spectrum of food production and consumption through a  series of day workshops and extended learning pathways. These are structured around three core thematic strands: The Journey of Our Food, Growing for Our Future, and Horticulture Skills.

Each theme encourages learners to investigate how and where food is grown, to critically examine the environmental and ethical implications of production and consumption, and to consider strategies for waste reduction, biodiversity preservation, and long-term sustainability. Through this integrated approach, participants develop both practical skills and systems-level thinking, equipping them to navigate and contribute to a more resilient and equitable food future.
