Dates/Sessions

Friday 12th December

Our STEM and Horticulture workshops teach how science and gardening work together to support a healthier planet. Aimed at both primary and secondary students, these engaging sessions are delivered by our expert staff, who combine their knowledge to explore topics like ecosystems, biodiversity, and sustainable growing.

This festive season we have two workshops on offer, to suit all stages of Primary education.

Early Primary Workshop – Grow, Christmas Tree & Let it Snow – Full Day 10am – 2pm

Get into the spirit of Christmas with this seasonal workshop that brings together STEM and the Education Garden at Dumfries House. Children will explore what snow is and how it forms, taking part in simple hands-on investigations to understand changes in states of matter and why winter weather can vary from year to year. Then, we’ll step outside to discover that the garden is still full of life, even in December. Pupils will learn what it takes to care for plants throughout the seasons, explore the lifecycle of a tree from cone to Christmas, and think about why evergreens stay green in winter. To finish, everyone will make their own snow-themed and nature-inspired decorations to take home — including one that will continue to grow long after the festive season has passed.

Late Primary Workshop – Sprout for Joy & Christmas Creative Circuits – Full Day 10am – 2pm

This festive workshop blends seasonal creativity with the science and flavours of Christmas. Pupils will explore some of the less celebrated vegetables found on the Christmas dinner table, cooking both savoury and sweet dishes while learning why these ingredients are part of our winter traditions and discovering the healthy goodness they offer. Alongside this, pupils will get hands-on with electricity, building simple circuits to understand series and parallel connections, conductors and insulators. To finish, they will design and make their own light-up Christmas card or decoration to take home—bringing together food, science, and festive cheer

Inspired by His Majesty The King’s Harmony in Nature philosophy, our workshops highlight the importance of working with natural systems — showing young learners how science can help us protect and nurture the world around us.

Our school education workshops support the delivery of The Curriculum for Excellence, and many of our activities are based outdoors on our 2000 acre estate, making use of our natural spaces to inspire learning. The King’s Foundation works in harmony with the natural world, and as such our workshops also touch upon the UN Sustainable Development goals and support learning for sustainability.
